Sweeping Changes is one of those golden reads - the sort of book you can pick up when you're feeling blue and not at all in the mood to sit down and read, and end up thoroughly entrapped inside the narrative before you have any clue how you got there. Johnstone sets up the reveal from page one, and from there keeps laying the track for the twists and turns ahead. Never once did I put this book down, weary of thick prose, never once did I feel that the story had been rushed or slowed for my benefit - the whole piece moved together like a finely-crafted film, drawing me into each new scene at a steady and engaged pace.Sweeping Changes sets up Johnstone's world nicely, providing an abundance of history and potential future character arcs, all within the body of a well-crafted story that feels refreshing and fun from start to finish. I find myself looking immensely forward to more works from this author, and hopefully more novels set in the "Sweep-verse", because there is definitely a massive amount of potential there for the reader to look forward to.

An old man awakes in the street, memory gone, and realizes that something is radically different, but he goes about his chore, his work of cleaning the streets. A voice is telling him something important, that he is more than a street sweeper, which fact is attested to in the first action sequence. But what? The voice in his head, it seems, is there to help.
As the story progresses, memories slowly trickle into his mind. He realizes he will play a critical role in the country's future, in its defense as he has done in the past. The street sweeper is a unique individual. There are mysteries to be unraveled.
The story is packed with conspiracy, an underground enemy, the smell of war and war itself that could be disastrous, a conflict of religions, and combat action all in a stew of magic -- both good and bad. The prose flows smoothly and the pace quickens as the story unfolds. Characters are colorful, convincing, and interesting.

Purchased a paperback copy. Coming in at 189 pages it's a light yet engaging read, perfect for a short weekend book. You sense from the start there is much more to the protagonist than even he knows knows at the start. But this in no way leaves it as predictable. The surprise is how complex his true character and past truly are since he has a memory condition at the start of the book. Given the length, subject matter, and pace the book is perfectly suited for young adults for a more engaged read, or as a light suspense/mystery fantasy novel for advanced readers. I certainly hope there will be more books from this new author . I want to follow Hess, the protagonist, along further tales as a street sweeper, or in his long and complex past.

Sweeping Changes is a fun young adult fantasy adventure that follows a seemingly normal street-sweeper who loses his memory, and in trying to regain it, discovers that he is not quite what he appears to be.
The book has a very positive tone throughout it, where characters are up against huge odds, but are determined to make the best of bad situations. The protagonist is at a disadvantage due to his memory loss, and the reader follows him through his attempts to regain what he has lost. It begins slowly, but once the floodgates open, the pacing of the book accelerates intensely, weaving flashbacks to a different time with explorations and investigations into the current conflict. The protagonist is an incredibly capable hero (sometimes staggeringly so), which leads to several particularly satisfying scenes where the "bad guys get what's coming to them."
The hero is a truly good person at heart, and continually sets an example for other characters and for readers of doing what is most helpful in the positions he finds himself in. This ties into a small morality sub-theme that comes up with the opposing forces in the story - a group of people with a wholly different yet believable set of values.
Moments of impending disaster and hardship are balanced with playful irreverence, and the voice inside the protagonist's head that simultaneously guides him and teases him feels like a longtime childhood friend. The book wraps up its loose ends very neatly, but still leaves things in a position that it's easy to imagine being expanded upon in later books. You're given a depiction of an intriguing world with a huge amount to explore, and small glimpses of what's out there leave you wanting more.
If you're looking for a light, upbeat fantasy story that will have you consistently smiling, I would definitely recommend this book.

New author shows lot of promise. I enjoyed the story. I hope that she keeps refining her craft and writes more in the future. Recommend to tweens up.
